Sister Monica Marie Hibberd died peacefully at the Ursuline Queen of Peace Infirmary in Alton.
She was born Salome Ann Hibberd on January 23, 1927 in Alton IL, the daughter of Louis Henry Hibberd of Pittsburgh PA, and Mary Mildred Sims of Alton IL.
Salome Ann attended Alton Senior High School and entered the Ursuline Novitiate in crystal City, MO in 1945. She professed her vows on January 16, 1948, and attended the College of new Rochelle, nY, wher she received a Bachelor’s degree in English in 1951. She received her Masters Degree in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University in Omaha in 1979. She was one of the first Ursuline Sisters to be certified for Montessori Education as well. Her teaching career provided an outlet for her love of little children, and she taught them in Kirkwood and Jennings, MO; San Antonio, Laredo, Midland, Alpine, and Dallas, TX; and in Springfield, IL. She also served in Frontenac, MN and enjoyed a year of renewal in Rome Italy in 1968. She joined the Queen of Peace Community in Alton in April of 2002.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Wednesday November 30 at the Ursuline Convent Chapel, 845 Danforth St, Alton IL. Visitation will precede the Mass beginning at 9:30 am. Reverend Stephen Pohlman will preside.
Burial will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey, IL.
Memorial gifts my be given to the Queen of Peace Ursuline Community, 845 Danforth St, Alton IL, 62002, where sister Monica marie Spent the Last years of her life.
