Sister Mary Walden, O.S.U. aka Colleen Viola Walden, died peacefully on August 12, 2011at the Ursuline Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in Alton, IL. The daughter of William F. and Viola Fay (Harlan) Walden, she was born November 15, 1922 in St. Louis, MO. Of her seven siblings, two survive her, her brother Pat Walden of Kansas City, MO and James Walden of Sioux Falls, SD. She was preceded in death by sisters Frances and Anastasia and brothers Harvey, Raleigh, and Eugene.
Mary attended Adams and Horace Mann Elementary School in St. Louis, MO. Her secondary education took place at Roosevelt High School in St. Louis and Ursuline Academy in Arcadia, MO. She received her B.A. from Briar Cliff College in Sioux City, IA and the College of New Rochelle in NY. She earned an M.A. in Religious Education at Catholic University of America and one in Theology at St. Mary’s University of San Antonio, TX. She entered the Ursuline Sisters in January of 1942 and made her first vows in 1944.
She shared her gifts and her education through ministry in Arcadia, Bonne Terre, and Vinita Park, MO; in Dallas, San Antonio, Fort Worth and Laredo, TX; and Springfield, IL Her ministries range from teaching to campus ministry to community leadership to marriage tribunal work in three dioceses. In May of 2009, she retired and came to live at Queen of Peace Healthcare Center in Alton, IL.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 17, 2011 at 10:30 a.m. at the Ursuline Convent Chapel, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, IL. Visitation will precede this Mass beginning at 9:30 a.m. Monsignor Kenneth Steffen will preside.
