Sister Mary Agnes Hermes died peacefully at the Ursuline Convent in Alton, Illinois, on Thursday, June 13, 2013. The daughter of Edward Andrew Hermes and Gertrude Agnes Bergschneider, she was born on November 25, 1922 in Jacksonville, Illinois. She was preceded in death by her brother, Paul Andrew Hermes. She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mary and nine devoted nieces and nephews.
Sister Agnes grew up in Alexander, Illinois, on the family farm, got her early education at Prairie College Elementary School and graduated from Ursuline Academy in Springfield, Illinois. She entered the Ursuline Sisters in July of 1940, making her vows in January of 1943. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from the College of New Rochelle in New York and her Master of Arts Degree from DePaul University in Chicago, doing post graduate work at the University of Dayton in Ohio, and St. Louis University. A long list of teaching assignments, supervisory responsibilities, leadership positions and nearly twenty years as provincial secretary define her colorful career, taking her to Springfield, and Oak Park, Illinois; Galveston, Texas; and Festus, Crystal City, Kirkwood and Arnold, Missouri. She retired in 2011 to the Ursuline Community in Alton, Illinois, where she served as assistant archivist until her death in 2013.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, June 22nd at 10:00 A.M. in the Ursuline Convent Chapel, 845 Danforth Street, Alton, Illinois. Visitation will begin at 9:00. Reverend Tom Horan, OMI, will preside.
