Sister M. Annunciate Keller, F.S.G.M., 82, baptized Rita, fortified with the Sacraments of the Holy Mother Church, died at 8:30 am Thursday March 3, 2011, at the St. Francis Convent Infirmary in Alton.
She was born June 16, 1928, in Schomberg, Schlesien, Germany, the daughter of the late Herbert and Kate Luise Keller.
She entered the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George on March 25, 1952, and professed her First Vows on October 4, 1954. She professed her Final Vows on December 17, 1958, and celebrated her Golden Jubilee in 2003. From 1954 – 1963, Sister worked in the office in Niendorf and studied English spending time in London and Oxford, England. On August 28, 1963, Sister went to St. Francis Convent in Alton, Illinois, USA, and was a high school teacher at Rosary High School in North St. Louis County, Missouri, for six years. For the next two years, Sister studied for a Masters Degree in Social Work at St. Louis University. In 1971, she went to Mary, Queen of Peace Convent in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and was a social worker for Catholic Charities. The following year, she was assigned to St. Francis Convent and did social work in the St. Louis area. From 1973 – 1987, Sister was a social worker at Saint Anthony’s Hospital, Alton. From 1987 – 1990, she worked in the Guidance Department at St. Mary’s Regional High School, South Amboy, NJ. Sister returned to St. Francis Convent in 1990 and did Social work at Saint Anthony’s Hospital, Alton.
She is survived by two sisters, Renata Nazimek of Franklin, WI, and Ingrid Strausse of Berlin, Germany and a niece, Barbara Segal of Benton, WA.
In celebration of her life, visitation will be from 3 pm until the time of a prayer service at 7:30 pm, Friday March 4, 2011 at St. Francis Convent Chapel at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton. Msgr. Kenneth C. Steffen officiating.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 8:30 am, Saturday March 5, 2011, at St. Francis Convent Chapel at St. Anthony’s Health Center in Alton with Msgr. Kenneth C. Steffen.
Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in Alton.
