Shirley A. McCune, 91, passed away Tuesday, August 13, 2024 surrounded by family.
Born at home on November 23, 1932 in East Alton, she was the daughter of Elmer and Gertrude (Cooper) Johnson.
Shirley started her nursing career as a "Candy Striper" at Wood River Township Hospital and after high school, she attended St. John Hospital School of Nursing in Springfield, IL, where she became a registered nurse. She returned to Wood River Hospital to begin her lifelong career in nursing enjoying mostly the emergency room and maternityand developing close and lasting friendships. She returned to school, attending McKendree College in Lebanon, where she received her Bachelors Degree in Human Services and assumed the role of Director of Nursing at the hospital in the 1970s.
At retirement, Shirley enrolled in the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener Program and became a Certified Master Gardener and volunteered in the "Garden Answer Line" in Edwardsville.
On September 17, 1955 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River, she was married to Roland E. ""Blindy" McCune. He died July 3, 2005.
Surviving are a son, Douglas (Michelle) McCune of East Alton; daughter, Christy Jones of Brighton; grandchildren, Madeline, Mallory and Maxwell McCune; special niece, Patty (Jay) Mader; nephew, Bob (Chris) Compton; and best friend, Betty Beers.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; sister and brother-in-law, Margie and Tanner Compton; an infant brother; and brothers-in-law, Dewey, Frannie, and John McCune.
A heartfelt thank you is extended to the staff of Family Hospice for their loving care.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until time of service at 12 p.m., Monday, August 19 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Wood River. Pastor David Schultz will officiate.
Burial will follow in Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials are suggested to St. Paul Lutheran Church Endowment Fund.
