Shirley Mae Pope, 86, formerly of Jerseyville, died at 7:46 p.m., Monday, May 30, 2016 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, Mo.She was born in Alton on April 23, 1930, the daughter of Fred A. and Christina (Schneble) Abell.Shirley lived in Jerseyville the majority of her adult life, and moved to Fulton, Mo., in the last few years as her health declined in order to be closer to her daughter. She retired from Owens-Illinois Glass Company in Alton, and was a lifetime member of the Eagles Ladies Auxillary as well as the American Legion Auxillary both in Jerseyville.She married Melvin L. Pope on Dec. 26, 1954 in Corinth, Ms. and together the two shared nearly 35 years before his death on Dec. 11, 1989.Surviving are a daughter & son in law, Christina K. & Randy Blasa of Fulton, Mo.; a son & daughter in law, Michael & Susan Bowman of Jerseyville; seven grandchildren & their spouses, Carrie & Ed Kallal of Jerseyville, Grant & Angie Gresham of Crystal City, Mo., Renee & James Earickson of Fulton, Mo., David Bowman of New York City, NY., Anne & David Anderson of Fulton, Mo., Ashley & Marqus Hoover of Seneca, and Haley & Robbie BlasaRailton of Fulton, Mo.; 16 Great Grandchildren and eight great great grandchildren.In addition to her parents and her husband, Melvin, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Sandra Gresham on Jan. 17, 1988; two sisters, Lucille Elmore and Helen McCormick and two brothers, Fred E. Abell and Charles Abell.Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 1:30 p.m., Friday at the Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father William Hembrow officiating.Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.Memorials may be given to either the American Cancer Society or to Masses.
