Shirley Jean King

Shirley Jean King, 81, passed away at 8:12 am Sunday, September 9, 2012 at Jerseyville Manor while under the care of Blessing Hospice. 

 

She was born on January 20, 1931 in Alton the daughter of Clyde and Virginia (Diesel) Edwards.   

She married Thomas D. King on March 26, 1948 in Alton and he preceded her in death on July 22, 1976.

Shirley was an accountant and office manager for Scheffel and Company for 33years until she retired in 1993.

She was a member of the Alton Eagles 254, enjoyed bowling, reading, watching TV and was an original member of the Alton Water Ski Club.

She is survived by: a son, Thomas D. King Jr. of Alton; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Joyce and Royal Ward of Godfrey, Virginia and Patrick Thatcher of Godfrey and Lori Tinnon of Alton; ten grandchildren, Kathleen Lung, Timothy King, Anthony Roberts, Carrie Rockholm, Christopher Ward, Amy Ball, Amanda Tinnon, Melissa Gullo, Emily King and Brittany Thatcher; 17 great grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Emery and Joan Edwards of Godfrey and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was also preceded in death by a son, Robert P. King at the age of 33, a daughter-in-law Kathleen King at the age of 28, an infant granddaughter Megan King at the age of 7 months; two sisters, Betty Rudy and Carolyn Whiteside.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday September 11, 2012 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be held at 10 am Wednesday September 12, 2012 with Pastor Patrick Thatcher officiating.

Burial will follow at Upper Alton Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Operation Blessing.
