Shirley Anne Allen

Bethalto | Thursday, May 30 2013

Shirley Anne Allen, age 76, went to be with her sweet, smart son, Mark and God in heaven. She fought hard to stay here and keep caring for her family but on Thursday, May 30, 2013 at Lourdes hospital in Paducah, KY she passed.

Shirley was born on September 21, 1936 in Memphis, Tennessee. She graduated from Mount Carmel High School in Illinois and loved to learn. She devoured books, specifically mystery and suspense. She often solved the puzzles on “Wheel of Fortune” before any letters were revealed. She was always working her crossword puzzles and liked the Price is Right. Shirley loved to have fun and overall had a zest for life. She loved all animals and adored babies as well. She couldn’t hear the “YMCA” or “Chicken Dance” without getting up and dancing. She loved Kentucky Wildcats Basketball and St. Louis Cardinals Baseball, which is something she and her husband, David Allen had in common. After David’s softball game in Clinton, KY, David saw Shirley walking and asked if she’d like a ride. Shirley loved her husband, David Allen dearly. They were married in Corinth, MS on December 6, 1954. They were married for 58 years and they hoped to make it to 60. The lived their lives in Kentucky and Illinois and have many precious friends. She worked at Shell Oil Company for 35 years in Wood River, IL. She programmed scheduling and always worked very hard.

David and Shirley were blessed with a baby girl on June 5, 1955 and named her Sherrye Anne. She made it clear that she was so proud of her “baby girl”. Then they had the joy of having a son on February 22, 1959 and named him Mark David. They lost him at the age of 6 due to heart disease and she always missed her “sweet and smart” boy. Shirley adored her granddaughters, Stephanye and Tiffanye. She always had them dressed to the nines and always lavished them with the best of everything. Anyone who had talked to Shirley lately would tell you that she always loved to talk about her great grandkids, Dominic Allen, Dravin Lee, Devin Michael and Lexye Danielle. Shirley “Gram” gave all of us some crazy nicknames such as: Fryer Ploohonker, Marocious, Tiffonie Bono, Puffball, D Waddlin, Dravey, Devin Michael, Daddy, and the Shmanielle.

Disney… She raised her grandkids and great grandkids to love Disney. They spent many vacations at Walt Disney World and on Disney Cruises. She was our Fairy Godmother. Animals… She adored animals and was like a modern day Snow White. She fed, cared for and spayed and neutered everything that came her way.

Shirley was passionate. She was caring and very charitable. She donated to St. Jude’s, she was secretary of Haven of Hope and collected baby bottles for money, she filled shoe boxes with toys and supplies for children’s charities and was always grabbing tags off of Christmas trees to buy gifts for local children.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, David Allen; one daughter, Sherrye Bond of Bethalto, IL; two grandchildren, Stephanye and Michael Colley of Godfrey, IL, Tiffanye and Kenny Shaw of Bunker Hill, IL; four great grandchildren, Dominic Allen Shaw, Dravin Lee Shaw, Devin Michael Colley, Lexye Danielle Shaw; two beloved cats, Joey and Princess; a brother, Gary Cannon of Bethalto, IL.

She was preceded in death by her young son, Mark David Allen; her parents, Margaret and Elree Cannon; her sister, Betty Skeels; and her loving aunt and uncle, Lindsay & Mildred Sullivan.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Monday, June 3, 2013 at Elias Kallal Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto, IL.

Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto, IL with Rev. Andre Dobson officiating.
