Sheila McKown

Benton, IL |

Sheila Kay McKown was born on September 2, 1946 in Benton, Illinois.  She fell asleep in death on February 9, 2025, at the age of 78.  She was surrounded by loved ones who will remember her foremost as a devoted wife, mother, and servant of Jehovah.

One of many joyous occasions throughout her lifetime arrived on September 2, 1963 when Sheila married her beloved, George.  Together, they would raise four children and share the next 58 years.

A mutual deep faith also brightened their home.  Sheila was baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses on April 18, 1976. The same love and commitment she applied to her household, she also gave to Jehovah.  Sheila never missed an opportunity to share the good news of God’s Kingdom with all she encountered. Even in later years, whether mustering strength for one more door or letter writing, she fully accomplished her ministry and delighted in those who supported her in this endeavor.

Sheila developed many interests over the years as well. She could be found admiring animals and flowers alike (yellow, a special favorite). She enjoyed the classics, from movies and television to music.  On game nights, you could hear her infectious giggling at the cards and Scrabble tables or see her mulling over a puzzle. Perhaps her greatest interest could be summarized in her hospitable nature. Sheila loved people and she loved to host.  Whether a meeting for field service or a meal with family and friends, the McKown door was always open.  How we long to see that door open once more in the New World to come!

Sheila was preceded in death by her husband, George V. McKown; her parents, William and Edna, nee Overturf Hammonds; and her brother, Gary Hammonds.

Sheila is survived by her children, Tonya Chwarczinski, Yalonda (Joe) Bates, Lynora (Tom) Benton, and Lindell (Bree) McKown; her grandchildren, Mica (Rigoberto) Curiel, Kallie (Grant) Beavers, Sierra Benton, Dawson Benton, Kameron Evans, Kayla (Tim) Michalik, Tristan McKown, and Tyson Bandy; and a great granddaughter, Lyla Monroe Beavers.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Kassly Mortuary, Ltd., Fairview Heights, IL.
