Sarah Roose

Sarah Jane Roose, aged 77 years, passed away on December 30, 2020 from idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. 

She was born Aug. 25, 1943 in Alton to Elmer G. Chestnut and Sarah Margaret (Hodge) Chestnut. 

She graduated from Bunker Hill High School and years later attended LCCC. On Nov. 5, 1960, she married Leo H. Smay in Bunker Hill. They had three children: Scott Edward Smay of Moro, IL, Dawn Marie (Barry) Morse of St. Augustine, FL, and Leigh Anna (James) Yoder of Jacksonville, IL. 

There are 8 grandchildren, Gregory Smay, Amanda Smay, Matthew Morse, Leah (Gabriel) Lynn, Abigail (Gabriel) Acevedo, Aaron Morse, Seth Morse, and Josiah Yoder. There are 5 great grandchildren, Eden and Remy Lynn and Emory, Aliya, and Zaida Acevedo. 

On June 6, 1993, she married Warren Roose, Jr., and her family grew to include his children, Frank, Cindy, Denny, Bill, Laura, and Eric, and she became Grandma to their children. 

She was employed by Ory Bros. Marine Service, Wood River Township Hospital, and she retired from St. Anthony's Hospital in 2009. 

Survivors include her mother, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren as well as two brothers, Elmer R. Chestnut and Donald L. (Vicki) Chestnut and a sister-in-law, Diana Chestnut, all of Bunker Hill; step-mother Mabel Chestnut; two step-sisters, Patsy Sue Stephens and Mary Lou Lovell; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 

Preceding her in death were her father, both former husbands, a brother Stephen R. Chestnut, and a step-brother, Bobby VanDeusen. 

A member of Second Chances Community Church (formerly Northside Assembly of God), she was involved with the senior ministry hosting a monthly fellowship dinner, and she also volunteered in the prison ministry. 

Memorial services will be held at a future date. 

Memorials may be made to Interconnect (prison ministry) at her church or to OSF St. Anthony's Hospice of Alton.
