Sammie “Sam” Hammond, 84, passed away at 4:24 am, Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at Rosewood Care Center.
He was born in Moko, AR on November 18, 1929, the son of the late Elmer and Vivian (Wallace) Hammond.
He married Jean (Miller) Hammond on January 13, 1951 in Bethalto.
Sam worked at Hutchinson Foundry in Alton as a foreman for 43 years before retiring in 1992. He was a member of Zion Presbyterian Church in Fosterburg. He enjoyed gardening, working in the yard, and woodworking. He loved to build things and was an avid Cardinals fan. He also served in the US Army for six months, when he was medically discharged.
He is survived by his wife, Jean; one daughter, Karen Lesemann of Carrollton; one son, Dennis (Barb) Hammond of Godfrey; one sister, Judy (Gary) Rull of Bunker Hill; one brother-in-law, Clyde (Marilyn) Miller; four grandchildren, Christina (Justin) Pierce, Laura (Xavier) Pena, Kelly Lesemann and Hannah Lesemann; along with three great-grandchildren, Remy, Xander, and Kylie.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, John “Jay”, a sister, Opal Holstine, and a son-in-law, Stuart Lesemann.
Visitation will be from 4 pm to 7 pm on Friday, November 22, 2013 at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton.
Funeral service will be at 10 am on Saturday, November 23, 2013 at Zion Presbyterian Church in Fosterburg with Pastor Mark Stone officiating.
Burial will follow at Fosterburg Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
