S. Lee Martin, 81, went to be with the Lord at 2:43 pm Thursday, November 17, 2011 at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton with his family by his side.
He was born on April 3, 1930 in Harriett, AR, the son of Sherman R. and Dovie B. (Lee) Martin.
He married Helen M. Crafton on July 21, 1952 in Arkansas. She survives.
Lee served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was a self employed truck driver for 40 years, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Cornerstone Assembly of God Church in Bethalto. He enjoyed yard work, being outside, watching cowboy movies, drag racing, motorcycles, and most of all he loved spending time with his family and grandchildren. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by five sons and four daughters-in-law, Dennis and Pam Martin, Randy and Kathy Martin all of Bethalto, Rev. Jeffrey A. and Ramona Martin of Cahokia, Mark Martin and Robert and Amy Martin all of Hartford; seventeen grandchildren; eleven great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews
He was preceded in death by his parents, six brothers and five sisters.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 pm Sunday, November 20, 2011 at Cornerstone Assembly of God Church in Bethalto. Funeral services will be at 10 am Monday, November 21, 2011 at the church with Pastor Phil Schneider officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto with military honors by Alton VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.
