Ruth Doerr

Ruth Lee Doerr, 102, passed away at 10:25 am Saturday February 16, 2013 at Bethalto Care Center.

She was born on January 25, 1911 in Gibbson Country, Tennessee the daughter of the late Albert Sidney & Lula Mae (Ramsey) Hutchinson.

She married William “Hoot” Doerr on July 12, 1930 in New Albany, Mississippi and he preceded her in death on May 30, 1982.

She graduated from Vardaman High School and then worked for Olin Corporation in production as their tool clerk for 35 years and retired in 1976.  She also worked for 20 years assisting the Bethalto City Clerk from 1957 to 1977 with her late husband William Doerr.

She was the oldest member of the Bethalto United Methodist Church where she has been a member since 1931.  She volunteered at the Bethalto Museum and was a member of the Wood River Area Garden Club for 24 years, a charter member of the Women’s Club of Bethalto and a board member of the Bethalto Spirit.  She was a Bethalto United Methodist Church Historian,  taught Sunday school for more than 40 years, sang in the choir and was  a member and teacher of the friendship class.  She was a member of the community choir of Bethalto for 10 years and volunteered at the Alton Crisis Center for more than 30 years.

She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Gary & Diane Doerr of Alton, four grandchildren, Kristine (Matt) Cleland, Victoria (Josh) Peck, Nicholas (Francesca) Doerr, and Stephen Doerr, six great grandchildren, Miranda, Avery, Miles, Penny, Max, Jake and another great grandchild on the way.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was also preceded in death by her twin sister, Rubye Hickman, three sisters, Elizabeth Hill, Emma Cargill and Maimie Burleson; and one brother, Eligah Hutchison.

In celebration of her life, a visitation will be from 10 am until time of funeral services at 12 noon Tuesday, February 19, 2013 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto with Pastor Mike Rayson officiating.

Cremation rites will follow and inurnment will be held at the Bethalto United Methodist
Cemetery at a later date.
