Rupert Laverne Ogden, 77, passed away at 9:30 p.m., Saturday, July 16, 2011 at Des Peres Hospital in St. Louis County, Mo.
He was born in Jersey County on Oct. 20, 1933, one of two sons born to the late William "Bill" and Letha "Tiny" (Perdun) Ogden.
Rupe, as he was commonly known, enjoyed sports, especially basketball, and was an outstanding basketball player during his middle school years.  He was proud to serve his country, and entered at the age of 19, the United States Marine Corp, serving during the Korean Conflict, and was honorably discharged in July of 1956.
He retired in 1992 from Owens-Illinois Machine Shop and few people could have had the enjoyment that retirement brought to him.
He often said that he didn't know how he had the time to work before retirement.
His greatest pleasure was being home and spending time with his family.  He enjoyed attending his grandchildren's events and seldom missed a game or a program.  He loved to hunt, fish, travel, bowl, woodwork, dominoes, playing cards with his friends and family, the history channel, but most of all he enjoyed golf, a sport he took up after retirement.
Surviving are his wife, the former Phyllis Cochran, who he married on Aug. 20, 1977 at the Fieldon Baptist Church; along with a son and daughter in law, Jeff & Linda Ogden of Bethalto; and a daughter and son in law, Sheri & John Heitzig of Jerseyville; a step daughter & her husband, Sandy & James Powers of Brighton; and a step son, David Dooley of O'Fallon.
Also surviving are five grandchildren, Jerrod Ogden of Jerseyville, Jake Ogden of Jacksonville, Megan, and her husband, Roy Flowers of Grafton, Hannah Heitzig and Justin Heitzig both of Jerseyville; Six step grandchildren, Adam, and his wife Rachel Taylor, Brett, and his wife, Miranda Taylor and Lindsey Taylor all of Brighton; Kerry Dooley and Jamie Dooley both of Jerseyville, and Jessie Dooley of Wood River; a great granddaughter, Gracie Jo Flowers; and six step great grandchildren, Blakley, Eliza, Ava, Kelly, Kayne, and Gavin; along with a brother and sister in law, William & Billie Ogden of Moore Haven, Fl; as well as numerous aunts, uncle, cousins, nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a niece, Connie (Ogden) Anderson.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Thursday.  Revs. Mark Myers and Dennis Hill will officiate.
Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville, where the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492 will conduct military honors.
In lieu of flowers and plants, memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church or to the Jersey County Marine Corp League, Robert Wendle Detachment.  All donations to the Marine Corp will stay in Jersey County for the benefit of local veterans and the Toys for Tots programCrawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville is in charge of the arrangements.
