Ruby Stobbs

Ruby completes her life’s journey the afternoon of July 27, 2014 at Delmar Gardens of O’Fallon in Missouri with her family at her side. She was the eldest daughter of Hugh A. Stewart and Estella (Darnell) Stewart who were buried in Cobden, IL. She was born February 10, 1918 in Chicago, IL. On November 23, 1938 she married Paul L. Stobbs in the rectory of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Alton. Years after Paul’s death she married Arthur Gregg of Florissant, MO where she resided for several years. In 1961 Ruby was finally able to fulfill her dream of completing her high school education at Alton High School and then pursued courses at SIUE. She retired in 1980 as accounting clerk of Illinois Power and previously worked for Dennis Bros. Furniture, Gately’s Department Store and Owens Illinois Glass all of Alton. She completed several years as a hospice volunteer for St. Anthony’s. Ruby returned to be near her Alton friends in 2002 to reside at United Methodist Village. She returned to O’Fallon, MO due to illness to be with her daughter. Surviving is a daughter, Marilyn Ulrich (George) of O’Fallon, MO, grandchildren, Diane Ressel (Michael) of Florissant, MO, Paula Eichholz (Jeff) of Kirkwood, MO, and William Ulrich of O’Fallon, MO, great-grandchildren, Amanda and Joseph Ressel of Florissant, MO, nieces; Rose Walter Zaidan (David) of Tallahassee, FL, and Janice Stobbs Brown of Ballwin, MO, a nephew, John Dale Stobbs of Godfrey as well as many great nieces and nephews and dear card playing friends. In addition to her parents and husband she was preceded in death by a sister, Cecil A. Stewart (who died in infancy) and a brother retired Major James A. Stewart of Camdenton, MO. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of memorial service at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, July 31, 2014 at the United Methodist Village Chapel in Godfrey. Father Jerry Wickenhauser will officiate. Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey at a later date. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the American Cancer Society.
