Jerseyville |

Roy Eugene Young, 95, passed away at 1:37 a.m., Saturday, January 11, 2025 at The Villas of Hollybrook, where he resided.

Born on December 31, 1929, in Jersey County, Roy was the son of the late Stephen and Mary (Crane) Young.

On September 5, 1953, he married the former Barbara Alice Lyles in Jersey County. Together they shared in 67 years of marriage and created many memories before her passing on October 14, 2020.

A proud lifelong resident of Jersey County, Roy served his country honorably in the United States Navy. After his military service, he worked for many years as a crane operator at Laclede Steel.

Following his retirement, and well into his 90s, Roy’s strong worth ethic and sociable nature shone through during his time at BayWash in Jerseyville, where he was a trusted employee who brought smiles to the faces of many.

Roy also found joy in tending to his flower and vegetable gardens and had a passion for collecting bottles. Among his collection, his most treasured piece was a rare Piasa Bird bottle, which he regarded as a great find.

Surviving are his children: Kim (Dale) DeSherlia of Jerseyville, Melody (Jim) Tolcua of St. Louis, Missouri, and John Young of Colorado; a son-in-law, Harold Whittles of Peoria; 13 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. He is also survived by his siblings, Doris Wedding of Dow, Frances Summers of Jerseyville, and Duane Young of White Hall.

In addition to his parents and beloved wife, Barbara, Roy was preceded in death by a son, Steven “Jamie” Young; a daughter, Holly Whittles; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Alice Lyles; four brothers: Edgar, Melvin, Elknah, and Donald Young; and three sisters: Maxine Sweetin, Mary Louise Thaxton, and Margaret Tucker.

Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. until the time of funeral services at 11 a.m. on Thursday, January 16 at Hope Lutheran Church in Jerseyville.

Burial will follow at the Kane Cemetery.

Memorials may be given to Hope Lutheran Church, in care of Crawford Funeral Home, who has been entrusted with arrangements.
