Roy G. Volner, age 105, passed away, at 4:30 a.m. Saturday, October 23, 2010 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton.
Roy was born in Vienna, IL on March 27, 1905, son of the late William & Mary (Speck) Volner.
He married Mary Margaret (Slaughter), November 4, 1924 at St. Raphael's Church in Mounds, IL. She passed away February 24, 1982.
Roy served his county in the National Guard. He was employed at the Illinois Terminal Railroad for more than 40 years, retiring in 1970. He was a member at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton, and a seventy-five year member of the Brotherhood Railway Carmen Division-Transportation Communications International Union. He loved to garden, watch baseball, collect coins, metal detecting and spend time with his family and friends.
He is survived by one daughter, Bernadine Schnitker of Fern Park, FL; twelve grandchildren and their spouses, Connie & Chuck Edmands of Brevard, NC, Susie & Dennis Swindell of Sterling, CO, Karen & Mike Malatesta of Maitland, FL, Steve & Julie Schnitker of Winter Springs, FL, Becky & Scott Karfeld of St. Charles, MO, Bill & Veronica Schnitker of Orlando, FL, Ann & Ed Luten of Pace, FL, Ellen & John Haddock of Lake Mary, FL, Kevin & Denise Schnitker of Altamonte Spring, FL, Greg & Margaret Volner of Alton, Mark & Stephanie Schnitker of Winter Park, FL and Mary Pettingill of Fern Park, FL; twenty eight great grandchildren and ten great-great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents; wife; one son, Roy G. Volner Jr. and one daughter, Rosemary Volner.
Visitation will be from 10:00 am until funeral mass at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 30, 2010 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Alton, with Fr. Michel, S.S L. celebrating.
Burial will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery, in Alton.
Memorials may be given to Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church and or Masses.
