Roger Lee Brooks, 89, died suddenly at 12:31 p.m., Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at his residence.
He was born in Jersey County on March 28, 1921, the only child born to the late Lynn Benson & Nellie E. (Barringer) Brooks.
Roger attended Hawkin's Prairie School and Jersey Township High School. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1943 and served as a crew chief.
While still in the service, he married the former Elizabeth Irene Kallal on June 3, 1944 at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, They resided in Florence, SC., and after his discharge, he was employed at Scholtzhauer International Harvester for three years, before moving back to Jersey County, where he moved back to the Brooks farm in the panhandle portion of Jersey County, where three generations of the Brooks Family had lived on the centennial farm. Together, he & Elizabeth raised their family of three children and farmed for almost 40 years, retiring in 1985. Five years later, the two decided to move into town, where they resided together until Elizabeth's death on April 16, 2000.
He was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, the Jersey County Farm Bureau, Moose Lodge, and American Legion all of Jerseyville.
Surviving are his three children, Richard E. Brooks of Chicago, John Brooks of St. Louis, and Pat, and her husband, Bob Barker of Homewood, Il; four grandchildren, Ben Zeinz & Katherine Zeinz both of Chicago, Rachel Zeinz of San Francisco and Jason Brooks of St. Louis; a great grandchild, Ava Maria Elizabeth Hurst of Chicago.
Visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m. Monday at the St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Patrick Gibbons officiating.
Burial will take place at St. Francis Xavier Cemetery in Jerseyville.
Memorials may be given to the St. Francis/Holy Ghost Catholic Schools in Jerseyville.
