Robert M. Zumbaum, 84, passed from this earth at 12:40 am Friday, March 30, 2012 with his family by his side. He was born on February 17, 1928 in Yankton, SD, the son of William and Lyndell (Ashbrook) Zumbaum. As a boy, he watched as Mt Rushmore was sculpted. Robert left high school at the age of 16 to join the Navy, serving in the SEABEES during World War II, later earning his GED from Equality, Illinois High School. He married Katherine M. DeVous on November 10, 1948 at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Equality, Illinois. She survives. Robert retired as a master machinist for Dugan Tool and Die after 40+ years. He enjoyed music, tinkering on small engines, gardening, and gave freely of his time and talents to his family and friends. Robert (Bob) was always ready to help a friend in need and share his knowledge. He will be missed by family and friends alike. In addition to his wife of 63 years, he is survived by his children and their spouses; Robert Zumbaum and his partner, Debra of Rosewood Heights, David and Cathy Zumbaum of Bethalto, Michelle and Dean Ruppert of Bethalto, Karen and Cecil Turner of Lagrange, KY and Kevin and Tina Zumbaum of Godfrey; his siblings, Cleopha Baker, JoAnn Snow, Zeta Davis, and Kenneth Zumbaum. Robert was blessed with fifteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and an older brother, William (Billy) Zumbaum Visitation will be from 2 to 5 pm on Sunday, April 1, 2012 at Elias Kallal & Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Military rites will be at 2 pm given by the Alton VFW Post 1308. Private family burial will be on Monday, April 2, 2012.
