Robert Lyles

Robert Joseph Lyles, 78, died at 1:37 p.m., Wednesday, December 28, 2022, at his residence after a brave battle with lung cancer.

He was born near Jerseyville on October 30, 1944, one of seventeen children born to Harry and Edna (Devening) Lyles.

Robert graduated in 1962 from Jersey Community High School in Jerseyville.

Shortly before being drafted into the Vietnam War, he married the former Jeanne Ann Thien on November 11, 1965, at St. John's Catholic Church in Carrollton. He served with the United States Army during the Vietnam War, dedicating 8 years of service to his country.

Upon his honorable discharge, he began employment with Laclede Steel in Alton, as well as Alton Steel, before retiring after 35 years of service.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Ann Lyles of Jerseyville; two sons and daughters-in-law, Rob and Kelly Lyles of Mt. Juliet, Tennessee, Randy and Stacie Lyles of Murfreesboro, Tennessee; a daughter, Angie (Lyles) Beiermann of Jerseyville; four grandchildren, Allyson "Maggie", Andrew, Katie Beth, and David; as well as three sisters and a brother-in-law, Lillie Wilson and Edie and Bernie Dugger, all of Jerseyville; and Cora Hadlock of Casper, Wyoming.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, L.C. Lyles, Herbert Lyles, Harry "Dick" Lyles, and James Lyles; seven sisters, Ruby Williams, Essie Heitzig, Hazel "Pete" Jones, Marcella "Mickey" Wallace, Mae Vickers, Janice O'Brien and Nora Jones; as well as two sisters in infancy, Violet and Dottie Lyles.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday, January 2, 2023, at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Father Martin Smith will officiate. Full Military Rites will be conducted by the Jerseyville American Legion Post #492.

Memorials may be given to the Monroe Carell Junior Children's Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, or Disabled American Veterans.
