Robert J. Lish (Nishwitz), Sr., 74, passed away at 2:05 p.m. Tuesday, November 16, 2010 at St. Clare’s Hospital in Alton. He was born May 27, 1936 in Louisville, Ky. to James Wallace Lish, Sr. and Stella (Tally) Lish. He graduated from Manley High School in Louisville. An expediter and mail handler for the U.S. Postal Service, he retired after 40 years. The U.S. Army veteran served during the Korean War and was a member of the Cottage Hills VFW. He also was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church in Wood River. An avid Cardinal baseball fan, he also was a college basketball fan. If he ever missed work, it was because a Kentucky Wildcats game was on television. He married Margaret E. Driver Aug. 8, 1953 in Alton. She passed away Feb. 1, 2006.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert Lish, Jr. and his wife Debbie of East Alton; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Deborah Lawton of Godfrey, Pamela and Gary Hamilton of Cottage Hills, Angela Lish of Alton, and Mamie and Juan Vazquez of Wood River; 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Margaret Pyles of Louisville, Ky.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter and son-in-law, Monica and Mike Quinn; a sister, Anna Marie Fries; and two brothers, Charles Lish and James Wallace Lish, Jr.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 19 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, where Father James Flach will conduct services at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20.
Interment will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society.
