Robert G. Read Sr., 80, died Tuesday evening, November 9, 2010 at his home.  Born May 18, 1930 in Alton, he was the son of Truman Read and Margaret (Staten) Read Ruckman.  He worked for Owens Illinois Glass machine shop in Godfrey for 20 years, he owned Alto Tool and Die in Cottage Hills for 10 years, owned Read’s Market on West Delmar for 10 years and had retired from Lincoln Engineering in St. Louis, MO as a tool and die maker.  He was an avid golfer, working at Rolling Hills Golf Course after retirement.  He served as a Master Sergeant in the 3rd Infantry Division of the U.S. Army during the Korean War. 

On December 28, 1956 in Alton, he married the former Betty A. Colman.  She survives.  Also surviving are two sons, Robert G. Read Jr. and his wife Deborah of Shawnee, KS and Richard E. Read and Teena Funk of Godfrey, four grandchildren; Dallas Read of N. Riverside, IL, Patrick Read of Boston, MA, Jennifer Read of St. Louis, MO and Daniel Read of Shawnee, KS and one sister, Martha M. Betz and her husband Michael of Alton.  He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his step-father, George Ruckman.

Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m. until time of memorial service at 4:00 p.m. Sunday at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. 

Burial will be Monday at 10:00 a.m. at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey with full military honors by the VFW Post 1308. 

According to his wishes, his body has been cremated. 

Memorials may be made to the BJC Hospice or a charity of choice.  A special thank you to Crystal and Brenda of BJC Hospice and the nursing and therapy staff at Alton Memorial Hospital.
