Rita Mullinix

Rita Elisabeth Mullinix, age 89, passed away peacefully on May 1, 2025, at Ever Vella in Swansea, Illinois. She was born in Daleiden, Germany on October 30, 1935, to the late Jakob Scholzen and Barbara Stumps. She grew up with her younger sisters, Sigrid and Iris, in Trier, Germany. She worked as a secretary for an electric company in Trier.
She met Vernon Mullinix on a 4th of July celebration at Bitburg Air Force Base, Germany and they married in June of 1965. Rita came to the USA in 1967 with her new husband and their first-born son, Eric, and first lived in Great Falls, Montana, where their daughter, Sonja, was born. She and Vernon eventually settled in El Paso, Texas to raise their children.
Rita hobbies included cooking, reading, and journaling. She loved to learn about different countries and cultures. Other interests included listening to music and going for walks, especially on scenic routes in Germany. She loved spending time with her family and was a dear friend to many.
Rita is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon F. Mullinix, her parents, and her sister Sigrid Kiko. She is survived by her children, Eric Mullinex and Sonja Jernigan; sister, Iris Pietsch; son-in-law, Steve Jernigan; and daughter-in-law, Ana Mullinix. She is also survived by four grandchildren, Zachary, Daren, and Kristen Jernigan (London), and Alec Mullinix; and five great-grandchildren, James, Rose, Leo, and Junie Jernigan, and Wade London.
In lieu of flowers, Rita’s family asks that you plant a tree in her memory.
Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 255 Fairwood Hills Road, O’Fallon, IL. Rita will be buried with her late husband, Vernon, at a later date at Fort Bliss National Cemetery, El Paso, TX.
