Richard E. Disher, age 83, passed away at 8:44 am Sunday, May 8, 2011 at his home with his family and extended family by his side.
He was born on December 18, 1927 in St. Louis, MO, the son of the late Elmer and Esther (Kretzer) Disher.
Richard married Stepenie V. Fania on September 9 , 1950 in Ironton, MO. She preceded him in death.
Richard worked as a land surveyor for the US Army where he surveyed the 39th parallel in Korea, and Sheppard Morgan and Schwaab and the federal government for over 35 years. He was a member of the Alton American Legion Post 1308, the Alton Eagles Lodge, the Owls Club of Alton, and Habitat for Humanity. He was also a member of the Christmas Wonderland Grandpa Gang at Rock Springs Park.
He is survived by one son: Richard Disher of Alton; two daughters: Theresa and her husband Joe Kettelhake of Alton, and Angela and her husband Randy McDonough of Branson, MO; one brother Ted Disher of Aurora CO; sixteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, and a special friend Donna VanPreter of Alton.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce vonSzilassy; two sisters and three brothers.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday May 11, 2011 from 4 pm to 8 pm at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Alton. Funeral mass will be Thursday May 12, 2011 at 10 am at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton with Father Nnamdi Moneme as the celebrant.
Military Rights performed by the Alton VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.
Burial will follow at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
Memorials may be directed to Christmas Wonderland or St. Mary’s Middle School.
