Reverend Doctor John Gordon “Jack” Evans

Reverend Doctor John Gordon “Jack” Evans, age 83, of Godfrey, Illinois, died on Thursday, February 23, 2012 at his home.  Jack was born on May 26, 1928, in Reynoldsburg, Ohio, the only child of G. Gordon and Mabel L. (Zeigler) Evans.  He married Joyce George on August 12, 1953, in Tarkio College Chapel, Tarkio, Missouri.  Jack graduated from Tarkio College in 1952, with a degree in applied music. 

He graduated from Pittsburg-Xenia Theological Seminary, Pittsburg, Pennsylvania, on June 22, 1955.  He was ordained at Wallace Memorial Presbyterian Church in Greentree, Pennsylvania, and served there for 3 years as their first full-time, youth pastor.  He served at Puckety Presbyterian Church in New Kinsingston (Now Lower Burrell), Pennsylvania, from 1958 to 1963.  In August 1963, he moved his family to Jennings, Missouri, where he served for 27 years as the pastor of Jennings United Presbyterian Church.  He received an honorary Doctor of Divinity Degree from Tarkio College on May 25, 1980.   He was an active member of Giddings-Lovejoy Presbytery.  He was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce, on Tuesday, March 8, 2011.   

Survivors include; son, George Evans, and his wife, Grace, of Godfrey, Illinois; daughter, Meg (Evans) Wrisinger, and her husband, Marvin, of Lexington, Missouri; and four grandchildren: Michelle (Evans) Harshbarger and her husband, Chris, of Godfrey, Illinois; John Evans of Godfrey, IL; and Carli and Jack Wrisinger of Lexington, Missouri. 

Graveside services were held on Monday, February 27, at 11:00 a.m.Quercus Grove Cemetery, located on Quercus Grove Road, Edwardsville, IL. Memorials may be given in his honor to the scholarship fund at College Avenue Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 1081, 1702 Clawson Street, Alton, IL, 62002. 

A public memorial service will be held at a later date.
