Ray H. Taylor, 95, died at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 13, 2011, at Friendship Manor in St. Elmo, IL. He was born October 31, 1915, in rural Brownstown, IL, to William and Pearl (Hedges) Taylor. His marriage to the former Wanda J. Eakins took place April 23, 1955 in Clarksville, IN.
He retired in 1980 from Ashland Oil Company where he had been a terminal operator, and was a lifetime member of both the American Legion Post 214 in Bethalto and VFW Post 1308 in Alton. The World War II Army veteran served in the Pacific with the 104th Engineers.
In addition to wife, survivors include his son, Philip Taylor of Oklahoma City, OK; two daughters, Gayle Leonard and husband, John and Laura Taylor, all of St. Charles, MO; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Leonard and Andrew Leonard, both of St. Charles and Alan Taylor of Oklahoma City. He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers, Noah, Thurman, Jack, Paul, Glen, Rollie and Charles Taylor; and two sisters, Nellie Taylor and Bonnie Hunter.
Military rites will be conducted on Saturday, July 30, 2011 at 1 pm by the American Legion Post 214 of Bethalto, followed by a memorial visitation until 3 pm at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Memorials may be made to American Legion Post 214 in Bethalto.
