Rae Jeanette Marshall (née Jones), age 90, of Granite City, IL, passed away on Wednesday, March 5, 2025, at Anderson Hospital in Maryville, IL. Rae was born on October 27, 1934, in Granite City, IL, a daughter of the late Roy Jones and Edna Theresa (Kotovsky) Jones.
Rae will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend. In April of 1956, Rae Jones married Charles David Marshall, the love of her life, with whom she shared 15 wonderful years until Charles passed away on March 19, 1971.
Rae was a very good student and a winner of an elementary school spelling bee. She loved to read, and her teachers would sometimes have her tutor classmates who were struggling with reading. After graduating from high school in 1952 she worked as a secretary at General Steel Castings Corporation, also known as the Commonwealth, until becoming a mother in 1957. She also worked as a secretary for the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod from 1977 until her retirement in 1996.
Rae was born and raised in Granite City, and she loved her hometown. She enjoyed traveling and was also an avid reader. Agatha Christie and John Grisham were two of her favorite authors. But her greatest joy was spending time with her family, whom she loved dearly, and spoiling her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Rae will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.
In addition to her parents and husband, Rae was preceded in death by a son, Darren Roy Marshall, son-in-law, Robert Clarkston, and by her siblings, Edwin “Bud” Jones, Audrey Layton, Alice Hudson, Ruth Hehle and Edna Barnes.
Rae is survived by her loving children, Cindy (Barry) Gibbs of Granite City, IL, David Marshall of Granite City, IL and Jane Clarkston of Edwardsville, IL; her grandchildren, Katie (David Birchmier) Gibbs, Megan (Ryan) Cunningham, Shelby (Blake) Powers, Meredith (Ben) Hutton and Matthew Clarkston; great-grandchildren Layla Cunningham, Owen Cunningham, Ruthie Cunningham, Evie Hutton and Luke Hutton; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, at Irwin Chapel, 3960 Maryville Road in Granite City, IL.
