Philomena Nicholas

Philomena Nicholas, 87, died at 4:40 p.m. Wednesday, December 11, 2013 at Rosewood Care Center in Alton. She was born February 16, 1926 in Calabria, Italy, the daughter of the late Anthony and Josephine (Cosca) Marchese. Philomena was a homemaker and pastor’s wife. She was a member of the Brown Street Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and was an active member of the Senior Servants group. Her husband, Reverend Paul E. Nicholas, whom she married May 15, 1948, preceded her in death on September 12, 2005. Her daughter, Mary Jo Oliver, also preceded her in death. She is survived by two sons, John (Rebecca) Nicholas of Bridgeton, MO and David (Luann) Nicholas of Xenia, OH, a son-in-law, Ken Oliver of Godfrey and four grandchildren: Nicholas (Jessica) Oliver of Fort Dodge, IA, Justin Oliver of Ankeny, IA, Alyssa Mars of Bridgeton, MO and Morgan Mars of Bridgeton, MO. Visitation will be from 10:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 12:00 noon Saturday, December 14, 2013 at Brown Street Baptist Church in Alton. Reverend Nicholas Oliver will officiate. Burial will be at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, MO. Memorials may be made to the Brown Street Baptist Church Scholarship Fund.
