Philip J. “P J” McGuire, age 87, passed away peacefully at 8:15 am Saturday, June 1, 2013 at his home under the care of BJC Hospice with his family by his side.
He was born on September 5, 1925 in Carrollton, IL, the son of John Louis McGuire and Clara Cecelia (Gress) McGuire.
He married Adele M Costa on January 25, 1958 at St Michael’s Catholic Church in Staunton. She preceded him in death on November 21, 1995.
Philip served his country in the U.S. Navy during WW II. He received a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration degree from Shurtleff College in 1952. He was an accountant for Shell Oil for 39 years, retiring in 1987. After his retirement, he served as a volunteer tax return preparer for VITA, giving tax assistance to the poor and elderly up through the 2012 tax year.
He was a long time member of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Alton. He transferred to St. Mary’s after the former was closed by the diocese. He was a member of the Alton Eagles #254, the Quarterback Club, Alton Wood River Sportsman’s Club and the Alton VFW Post 1308.
He was a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. He was present at Busch Stadium on October 2, 1968, when Bob Gibson set the World Series record by striking out 17 Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the World Series. He was also a fan of St. Louis football Cardinals and, later, the St. Louis Rams. He was an avid golfer. He also enjoyed hunting with his family members, and he loved spending time with his son and his family at their wilderness cabin in Ontario, Canada.
He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John and Debby (Meadows) McGuire of Edwardsville and a daughter and son-in-law, Mary McGuire and Dan Mercado of Saratoga, CA; four cherished grandchildren, Benjamin Philip Meadows McGuire and spouse Kelley of Edwardsville, Elizabeth Costa Mercado, Grace McGuire Mercado and Joseph Anthony Mercado, all of Saratoga, CA; three sisters, Mary Margaret Henkhaus of Jacksonville, Eileen Simonds of Wood River and spouse Richard, and Donna Kerrihard of Oklahoma City, OK and spouse Thomas; one brother, Clarence McGuire of Carrollton and spouse Viola; two sisters-in-law, Doris McGuire of Granite City and Jean McGuire of Carrollton and twenty three nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Edgar McGuire, Lawrence Vernon McGuire and Donald “Mac” McGuire, and a special companion late in life, Dorothy Stumpe.
In celebration of his life, visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm Tuesday, June 4, 2013 at Staten-Fine Funeral Home in Alton.
A funeral Mass will be at 10 am on Wednesday, June 5, 2013 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Alton.
Burial will be at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey.
Memorials may be made to Siteman Cancer Center at Washington University.
