Perry Smith

Glen Carbon |

Perry Dean Smith, 80 years old, of Glen Carbon, IL, peacefully transitioned early Tuesday morning, 09/28/2021, at Hitz Memorial Home in Alhambra, IL. She was surrounded by a wonderful, loving staff, at Hitz Memorial Home, and her daughter, Jeanette Smith Jordan, when she took her last breath. A few days before she transitioned, she was able to reunite with her dear sister, Rosie Lee Wright Smith, her nephew Jamie Evans, five out of 10 of her grandchildren (DJ, Christina, Joshua, Amanda, & Renee-via video), and her baby daughter -via video, Teresa Renee Desir (Along with her husband Ru). Also present, were her daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Angie M Harris and Dayleon Harris, who are local, and have been wonderful caregivers to Perry over the past 3 ½ years while she resided in the nursing home. And lastly, a friend, and mother to Perry’s son-in-law, Dayleon, Georgia Loraine Gulley, also stopped by to see her. Fortunately, she seemed to recognize everyone, which was special since she carried a diagnosis of dementia for a few years. In addition, she suffered a stroke on 12/26/2017, which left her with hemiparesis on the left side of her body.

Perry was born to Elijah (dec.) and Mattie Lou (Berryhill) Wright on 12/02/1940. Shortly thereafter, they bore another daughter, Rosie (Wright) Smith. They were briefly in the care of a paternal aunt, before moving to Georgia to be raised by their paternal grandmother, Tepie Swain (Wright) Ball. Perry and her sister eventually moved in with their aunt and uncle, Martha Lee (Wright) and Roosevelt Freeman Wright, Sr., who continued to nurture and raise them as their own, along with their 6 children, Elnora, Alta, Malora, Roosevelt Jr, Willis, and Roger Lee, they all preceded Perry in death.

Perry married her husband, Theodis Smith in March 1960. They raised four beautiful daughters, Patricia Ann Smith, who preceded Perry in death, Jeanette Smith Jordan, of Salinas, CA, Dr. Angie (Dayleon) Harris of Glen Carbon, IL, and Teresa (Ru) Desir, of Sunrise, FL. Perry worked as a bookkeeper for Smith’s Tire Service, a company her husband incorporated along with two of his brothers in South Florida, for many years. This allowed her to be home during the early years of her children’s lives. After they got older, she worked as an assistant supervisor at the distribution center of J. Byron’s, which later became Byron’s, and ultimately, Uptons. She enjoyed her years of work there and met many dear friends. As her children became adults, married, and started their own families, she was able to visit and spend extended periods of time, loving on her grandchildren, assisting in raising them up, and instilled manners and wisdom in each one of them. She also enjoyed a few hobbies, which included being on a bowling team with her husband, and she really enjoyed fishing! Salt water, fresh water, lakes, or creeks, it didn’t matter, if she could sit and fellowship with family and friends and reminisce

She is survived by her loving children, Jeanette, Angie (Dayleon), Teresa (Ru); a dear sister Rosie W. Smith of Miami FL and her sons, Randolph Smith, Jr., Kenny Smith (preceded her in death), Curtis (Nichelle) Smith, Jamie Evans; a proud Nana to Amber Godet, Dayleon A. Harris, Christina Renee Mills, Joshua T. Mills, Amanda Perry Mills, Yamil Jordan, Miya Harris, Renee Desir, Kyla Harris, and Quinton Jordan; dear friends of Miami, FL, Alma Hooks, Priscilla I. Ferrell, and Priscilla Angie, dear friends of Salinas, CA, Linda, Tammy, Juanita, and Carmen; a dear friend of Snellville, GA, Mamie Chealey; a host of sisters-in-law, a brother-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins, and family friends.

Perry was raised in a Baptist Church, but later in life, decided to dedicate her life to Jehovah and was baptized as a Jehovah’s witness on January 5, 2013, with the Fort Lauderdale East Congregation. You would often find her tucked away in her bedroom studying diligently. She loved everyone and had a servant’s heart. She always made room for you in her life.

Visitation will be held from 3:00 to 4:00 PM on Monday, October 4, 2021, at Irwin Chapel, 591 Glen Crossing Rd, Glen Carbon, Illinois. In celebration of her life, funeral services will follow at 4:00 PM on Monday at the Funeral Home. Memorial donations may be given to Hitz Memorial Home. Donations will be accepted at the funeral chapel. Condolences may be expressed to the family online at
