Omar Thomas "Tom" Smith, Jr., 64, loving husband and father, passed away at 10 p.m. Thursday, July 8, 2010 at his home.
Born Apr. 17, 1946 in Herrin, Ill., he was a son of Omar T. Smith, Sr. and Virginia (Dodds) Smith.
He married Deborah S. Petry May 7, 1977 in Godfrey. She survives.
He was a truck driver for Peavey Mill/ConAgra for 30 years, and then for W.W. Transport for 10 years.
The U.S. Army Vietnam veteran loved cars, riding motorcycles, traveling, and playing with his grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his mother Virginia of East Alton; his children and their spouses, Carrie and Steve Rotty of St. Louis, Kim and Dan Hagan of Ocala, Fla., Steven Wiegand of Arnold, Mo., Omar Thomas Smith III and his wife Ryann of Fr. Carson, Colo. , and Corissa and Richard Goewey of Alton; 11 grandchildren, Jacob Parrent, Raymond , Rebecca, and Ryan Rotty, Gauge and Levi Wiegand, Austin and Megan Smith, and Cameron and Gavin Goewey; a sister and brother-in-law, Anne and James Simpson of Antioch, Tenn.; and a brother and sister-in-law, William and Thresa Smith of Bethalto.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Tuesday, July 13 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, where services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 14.
Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto, with military honors by Alton VFW Post #1308.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
