Oma E. Oetken, 96, passed away at 11:25 am Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Alton Memorial Hospital in Alton.
She was born on December 9, 1914 in Wood River, IL, the daughter of August and Anna (Rathert) Hoekstra.
She married Mervin Oetken Jr. on April 20, 1935 in Kampsville, IL. He passed away on February 24, 1990.
Oma was a joint owner/operator of Community Plumbing and Heating. She also worked at the Western Cartridge Company. She was a member of the Bethalto United Methodist Church and O.E.S. Local 847. She was a mother advisor for Rainbow for Girls, a 4-H Leader, belonged to the Bethalto Women’s Club, Single Adults and the Bethalto Senior Citizens. Her passions were her family, church, country, the St. Louis Cardinals and traveling. She loved life and was always ready to go somewhere.
She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Shirley and Dwane Bruns and Mary & Lowell Brown; five grandchildren and their spouses, Diana and Francis Lockwood, Doug and Robin Bruns, Matt and Lori Bruns, Justin Brown and Michael and Nicole Brown and eight great grandchildren, Nick and Anna Lockwood, Jeff Bruns, Julie Bruns, Alyssa Bruns, Drake Bruns, Jerra Brown, William Brown and Christopher Brown
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Jeffrey Bruns.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 pm on Friday, September 16, 2011 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto. Celebration of Life services will be at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Bethalto United Methodist Church with Pastor John Tennyson officiating.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
