Olen “O.T.” Yates, 76, died at 6:55 p.m. on Wednesday, July 13, 2011 at Saint Anthony’s Health Center in Alton.
He was born September 18, 1934 in Alton, the son of the late Olen H. and Margaret M. (Brady) Yates. He attended Alton Schools and graduated from Alton High School in 1952. He attended The University of Illinois majoring in Agriculture and was a mechanic in the U.S. Air Force. He was an avid trap shooter and a lifetime member of the American Trap Shooters Association, former member of Alton Jaycee’s and a Smith and Wessen Distributor. He was a hunter and motorcycle rider. He worked at Alton Steele Mill and Allied Produce.
He was the former owner operator of O.T. Yates Produce at 9th and Belle Street in Alton. He was a Northrup King Seed Distributor and retired from farming in 1997. He was a member of Jerseyville United Methodist Church in Jerseyville.
In October of 1975 in Brighton, he married Doris Wuebbles and she preceded him in death on January 28, 1988. Surviving are seven children: John (Julie)Yates of Bethalto, Tamara Yates and her partner Angela Saunders of Alton, Mary Kennett (Ryan) of Troy, Il, Cathy Field of Renton, Washington, Margaret Beer (Rick) of Peoria Heights, IL, Thomas Yates of Alton, and Timothy Huggins of Ashley, TN. 12 Grandchildren and 4 Great Grandchildren. Two brothers: William Yates (Bonnie) of Grafton, and Robert Yates (Karen) of Grafton. One sister: Louann Seager (Gary) of Godfrey. Besides his wife he was preceded in death by one son: Hoyt T. Yates.
Visitation will be Sunday, July 17, 2011 from 3:00 p.m. until time of service at 7:00 p.m. at Jerseyville United Methodist Church in Jerseyville, Illinois with Reverend Mark Myers and Reverend Dennis Hill to officiate. Private Burial at Scenic Hill Cemetery in Grafton.
