Norval Gusewelle

Norval F. Gusewelle, 93, of Glen Carbon, Illinois passed away at 4:45 a.m. on Saturday, March 27, 2021 at Edwardsville Care Center in Edwardsville. He was born June 6, 1927 in Troy, Illinois, a son of the late Louie and Minnie (Dustmann) Gusewelle. He married Marie (Tarjany) Gusewelle on May 31, 1952 in St. Louis and she passed away on July 5, 2012.

Norval was a faithful member of St. James Lutheran Church in Glen Carbon where he served as a trustee for many years and a member of the church council. He retired from Laclede Steel in Alton after many years of dedicated service as a shear operator. The United States Army veteran proudly served his country during the Korean War and was the recipient of many medals and recognitions. He was a life member of the V.F.W. Post 2222 in Glen Carbon and the American Legion Post 435 in Glen Carbon. He was also a member of the Laclede Steel Retirees and a member of the Helvetia Sharpshooters Society in Highland. Norval enjoyed hunting, fishing and his days of dancing and will be remembered for the love and special times shared with his family, his church family and many friends.

In addition to his beloved wife of 60 years and parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Walter and Lawrence Gusewelle and two nephews, Steve Hafertepe and Michael Tarjany.

He is survived by a sister, Arlene Gusewelle; two sisters-in-law, LaVerne Gusewelle and Evagene Gusewelle; a brother-in-law, Emil Tarjany; nieces and nephews, Sherri Verdun, Deborah Harrington, Chris Hafertepe, Tina Auld, Charlotte Schultz, Lisa Hardy, Lana Facciolini, Laura Rawe, Lavetta Gusewelle, Renee Bippen; many great-nieces; great-nephews; other extended family and friends.

In celebration of his life, a visitation will be at St. James Lutheran Church, 146 N. Main Street in Glen Carbon on Friday, April 2, 2021 from 9:30 a.m. until time of funeral service at 11:00 a.m. with Reverend Aaron Mueller officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon. Memorials may be made to St. James Lutheran Church.
