Norma Harris

Norma Jean Harris, 77, died at 9:23 p.m. Monday, May 7, 2012 at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield, IL. She was a resident of Sunny Acres Nursing Home in Petersburg, IL. Born June 18, 1934 in Alton, she was the daughter of Joseph Wilson and Gladys Mamie (Darnel) Harris. Miss Harris graduated from Blackburn College and went on to earn her master’s degree from Illinois State University. She was a school teacher in the Springfield District #186, retiring after 38 years of service. She was an avid reader, enjoyed gardening and volunteered at the Illinois State Museum. For many years she taught Sunday school at the Jerome Methodist Church in Jerome, IL. Surviving are a brother, Melvin Harris of Worden, IL, and a sister, Helen Lilly of Petersburg, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents. Visitation will be from 12:45-1:45 p.m. Thursday, May 10, 2012 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton, IL followed by a graveside service at 2:00 p.m. at Upper Alton Cemetery.
