Nettie Long

Nettie Long, 95, died at 6:30 p.m., Saturday, July 24, 2010 at Jerseyville Manor Nursing Home where she had been a resident for several years.

She was born in Jerseyville on July 13, 1915, one of five children born to the late Robert & Caroline (Graner) Ferris.
A resident of Jerseyville her entire life, Nettie worked at the Western Cartridge in East Alton for fifteen years.  She then enrolled in Sally's Beauty School in Alton, purchasing a beauty shop located above Bray's Drug Store in downtown Jerseyville, renaming it "Nettie's Beauty Shop".  She spent 30 years enjoying the relationships that she had developed through the years.  She and her husband Paul were also very active with the Jerseyville American Legion Post 492, and they were involved in many capacities within the club throughout the years.

She and Paul were married on Feb. 16, 1946 at the First Presbyterian Church in Jerseyville, and they were the parents of a son,  Paul E. Long Jr., who died in infancy.  Paul & Nettie made their home in Jerseyville, where they were involved in numerous activities until his death on July 15, 1999.

She is survived by a step daughter, Sharon Mertz of Florissant, Mo.; along withnumerous other family members and devoted friends.

In addition to her parents, husband, and son, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert & Isaac "Jack" Graner; and two sisters, Catherine Redlickand Thelma Holland.

Visitation will be from 11 a.m., Friday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville, until time of funeral services at 1p.m.  Father William Hembrow will officiate.

She will be laid to rest with her two Paul's at Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.

Memorials may be given to the American Legion Post 492 Color Guard.
