Nellie M. Smithee, 94, died at 2:35 p.m. Monday, September 8, 2014 at her home. Born June 7, 1920 in Fidelity Township, IL, she was the daughter of William T. and Celia A. (Strait) Woods. Mrs. Smithee was an active member and Elder of the Elm Street Presbyterian Church in Alton and retired from the service department at Owens-Illinois Glass after 25 years of service. She was past Department Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary of the State of Illinois and was currently serving as secretary. She was also secretary and past president of the VFW Post 1308. On May 6, 1976 she married Allen Smithee in Alton. He preceded her in death on July 26, 1988. Surviving are two daughters, Paula Raymond of Alton, and Barbara Pitt (Kerry) of Edwardsville, a son, Gary Conrad of Grafton, two step-daughters, Carolyn Clark of Atlanta, GA and Shirley Brandt of Houston, TX, a step-son, Tom Smithee (Cheryl) of Houston, TX, nine grandchildren, and six great grandchildren. Along with her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by four brothers, Herbert, Frank, John, and Stephen Woods, and four sisters, Lillie Woods, Bessie Woods, Daisey Belangee, and Jennie Seehausen. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, September 11, 2014 at Gent Funeral Home in Alton where funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. Friday, September 12, 2014. Pastor Bill Veith will officiate. Burial will be at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto. Memorials may be made to Elm Street Presbyterian Church in Alton or the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.
