Nancy Jane Groff

Alton | Wednesday, December 30 2015

Nancy Jane Groff passed away peacefully in Alton Memorial Hospital during the afternoon of December 30, 2015 with family by her side.

She was born on June 11, 1935, in Alton, the daughter of the late Mosaline (Allen) and Richard Leonard.  Having lost her mother in infancy, Nancy was lovingly raised by her grandmother, Vashti Juanita Leonard.

Nancy married her husband, Richard E. Groff, on April 30, 1955.  They were married 60 wonderful years and had two children, Thomas and Vanessa.  Before retiring, Nancy was employed at First National Bank in Alton.

Nancy enjoyed working crossword puzzles with her husband and sometimes called on the internet’s help to figure out answers for her (even though she took the credit!).  She also faithfully kept track of the unfolding drama on The Young and the Restless.  She was the television show’s unofficial historian for over 30 years!  Most importantly, spending time with her family brought Nancy the greatest joy and lots of laughs.

Nancy is survived by her caring husband, Richard, their son and daughter-in-law, Thom and Alice Groff of Alton, and daughter, Vanessa Groff of Alton.  In addition to her husband and their children, she is also survived by her nephew and his wife, Tim and Judy Delaney; niece and nephew, Jennifer Jokerst and Steven Delaney; granddaughters, Alison and Ashley Witcher, Katelyn Childers; grandsons, Jeffrey and Dennis Kinser, David and Kyle Hoffmann, and Clinton Smith; great-granddaughter, Gracee Hoffmann; great-grandson, Trevor Childers and numerous cousins of White Hall and Jerseyville, IL.

Along with her parents, Nancy was also preceded in death by her beloved sister, Beverly (Leonard) Delaney, several aunts, uncles, and cousins, as well as her feisty Chihuahua, Cricket.

In celebration of Nancy’s life, a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until time of service at 12:00 p.m. with Reverend David Crowley officiating.   Per her wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and interment of her ashes will follow at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey, IL.  Memorial contributions may be made to Paralyzed Veterans of America, 801 Eighteenth Street, N.W., Washington, DC, 20006.  Additional information and online guestbook may be found at www.gentfuneralhome.com
