Nadine Harden, 93, of Surfside Beach, SC, passed away July 6, 2011. She was born near Kirksvile, MO, on May 17, 1918, the elder daughter of Frank and Lallie VanSickle. She graduated from Brashear schools and Northeast Missouri State Teachers College.
Nadine undertook a teaching career that spanned forty-one years, beginning in a one-room school when she was just sixteen. She finished her last eighteen years teaching college preparatory English at Alton High School, in Alton Illinois.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Harden, long-time physics teacher at Alton High School, in 1978.
Cecil and Nadine retired to South Carolina's Grand Strand in 1975 to enjoy warmer weather and to be nearer to family. Nadine became an avid salt-water angler and traveler. Her excursions included visits to Australia, New Zealand, Tahiti, Fiji, Kenya, Tanganyika, the Panama Canal, and Alaska.
She is survived by her son, Van, of Surfside Beach, SC; a grandson, Robert L. Harden of Surfside Beach and the University of South Carolina; and granddaughter, Mrs. Amanda L. Grigg (Dan) of Greensboro, NC. Also surviving are a sister Mrs. Sue Salladay (Robert) of Sarasota, Florida, a niece, Jill Salladay, of Atlanta, GA, and a grand niece, Tara Kopp, of Bogart, GA.
She is also survived by childhood playmate and lifelong best friend, Mrs. Neva Sleeth of Brashear and Kirksville, MO.
Local services will be private, with arrangements handled by Myrtle Beach Funeral Home. A memorial service in Alton will be announced later.
