Morris Ronald and Patricia Susan Briggs

Morris Ronald Briggs, 74, died at 9:55 p.m., Saturday, April 30, 2011 at Alton Memorial Hospital.  His wife, Patricia Susan Briggs, 62, died 27 hours later at 12:21 a.m., Monday, May 2, 2011 at Alton Memorial Hospital, both of natural causes.Morris was born on Nov. 12, 1936 in Fieldon, and was the son of the late William Jefferson & Pearl Rosebud (Cope) Briggs Sr.  He graduated from Jersey Community High School in 1954, and immediately joined the U.S. Navy where he was stationed in Japan.Patricia was born in Litchfield on Oct. 14, 1948, and was the daughter of the late Ernest Martin & Fern Opal (Reader) Long.  She graduated from Civic Memorial High School in Bethalto.Morris had worked at numerous factories in our area, and was a well known bartender at both the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the Eagles Lodge both in Jerseyville, and had tended bar at various Alton establishments.  Patricia had worked at Ropers Plastics in Jerseyville for many years, and had also worked in housekeeping at Harrahs Casino in St. Charles, Mo.They both were avid St. Louis Cardinal fans, and enjoyed anything outdoors, sitting down and enjoying a beer with friends, and making occasional visits to the gambling boats.Surviving are their children & their spouses, Tammy & Jon Devening of Jerseyville, Brenda & Tim Holmes of Alton, Randy & Kim Briggs of Maryville, Penny Castleberry of Sedalia, Mo., Lorra & Steve Stahlheber of Murphysboro, Gary & Jackie Stamm II of Godfrey, and Michelle Edwards of Wood River; 23 Grandchildren and 11 Great Grandchildren.Morris is also survived by five sisters & their spouses, Elise & Milford Simpson of North Carolina, Thelma Davis of Jerseyville, Grace & Delbert Kanallakan of Jerseyville, Barb & Jim Lyles of Kane, and Marcella & Jim Lyles of Georgia.Patricia is also survived by a sister, Betty Lou Davis of Hartford; and a brother Charles Martin Long of Godfrey.They were both preceded in death by their parents, a grandson, Warren Laverne "Bud" Crull; along with Morris brothers & a sister, Betty Roberts,  Charles Briggs, Paul Briggs, and William Briggs Jr.Combined visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville where funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday.  Rev. Carl Hayes of the First Assembly of God in Jerseyville will officiate.Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Jerseyville.Memorials may be given to the family in care of the funeral home.
