Milton E. “Sonny” Johnson, 75, passed away at 12:23 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at Alton Memorial Hospital with his family at his side.
Born June 29, 1937, he was the son of Milton Franklin and Helen Irene (Burris) Johnson.
Sonny graduated from Shawnee High School in Wolf Lake, Ill. in 1955. He married Barbara A. Schenk May 4, 1958 in Aurora, Ill. She passed away Feb. 23, 2006.
He worked at Welder Industrial/Amerigas in Wood River for 28 years. He was in the Teamsters Local #525 for 42 years, serving as a trustee on the Executive Board and as a past President, a position he proudly served. He retired in 1999.
He is survived by 3 daughters, Barbara (Jim) Gernigin of Dorsey, Trudy Adams of Bunker Hill, and Connie (Stan) Hartwick of Louisiana, Mo.; 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren;, and a sister, Susie (Les) Hale of Brighton; 2 nieces, Dana (Paul) Witt and Wendy (Jeff) Moffat; 3 great nephews, 3 great nieces, and 3 cousins.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Helen “Bootsie” and Van T. Lane and their son.
Memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Childrens Hospital or the Shriners Hospital for Children, both of which he was a huge supporter.
In death, as in life, Sonny continues to help people, as he was an organ donor.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Apr. 11 at Paynic Home for Funerals in East Alton, where Pastor Joe Fletcher will officiate services at 10 a.m. Friday, Apr. 12.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
