Mildred Davis

Mildred Bertha (nee Valentine) Davis, age 97, died Dec. 4, 2024, at Asbury Village in Godfrey, IL. Mildred was born Dec. 17, 1926 to parents Jo Harvey & Ruth Elizabeth (nee Meneley) Valentine. She was born & raised in the Greenfield area and graduated from Greenfield high school 1944.

Mildred moved to Alton to attend beauty school. She operated her own shop for a few years, then later became a school bus driver, and finally ran the family rental business after her husband’s death.

One of her hobbies was attending theater plays. Another was bird watching. Her family owned a boat and loved going out on the Mississippi River. In retirement, she and her husband both helped the Alton Grandpa Gang who decorate Rock Springs Park for Christmas.

On July 19, 1946, Mildred married Carl Phillip Davis (born Jan. 5, 1924 - died Aug. 17, 2008) in Greenfield IL. They had 4 children: Patricia Ann (nee Davis) McKune of AZ, born 1954; Donald Valentine Davis, 1956-1989; Stephen Arthur Davis of KS, born 1960; and Roger Alan Davis of IN, born 1962.

There are 2 granddaughters: Wendy Lynne McKune of AZ, born 1998, currently attending SIUE. Emma Grace Davis of KS, born 2003, currently attending Purdue U in IN.

Mildred was preceded in death by her son, Donald, her husband, Carl, her parents and 3 sisters. Her sisters are known in this area: Roberta (Haven) Wade, Mary (Valentine) Hill & Downard, Anne (Valentine) Plemitscher.

The cremated remains of Mildred Davis will be interred in the Providence Cemetery in rural IL. Please do make a donation in lieu of giving flowers. Contributions can be made in her honor to: Alton Little Theater, John M. Olin Nature Preserve or the Jacoby Arts Center.
