Michael Joseph Smith, 75, died Friday, June 23, 2023 at Mercy Hospital South in Saint Louis, Missouri, following complications from a fall.
He was born on September 27, 1947 in Alton, Illinois and was one of five children born to the late Joseph and Maxine (Holbeck) Smith.
Mike graduated with the class of 1966 from Jersey Community High School and enlisted with the United States Army, serving our great nation from 1966 until his honorable discharge on September 22, 1968.
He was employed as a Machinist with Olin Corporation, where he retired as a Maintenance Supervisor and was also a partner with Jerseyville Precision.
He married the former Theresa Meuth on September 28, 1984 in Jerseyville, and for the past 38 years they have shared in many wonderful moments together with their families.
Family meant the world to Mike, and he enjoyed nothing more than having everyone together. Mike enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing and camping, and hosting his family and friends for cookouts.
Perhaps Mike’s greatest passion was that of a proud United States Veteran. He was actively involved with the Jerseyville American Legion Post #492 for many years, prior to his formation of the Tri-County Honor Guard, where he was actively serving as Commander. He worked tirelessly to provide assistance to area Veterans and as a member of the Honor Guard performed over 3,000 military honors to deceased Veterans and their families.
Surviving are his wife, Theresa Smith of Jerseyville; four children, Christopher Smith and his companion, Stephanie Lora, of Jerseyville, Charles Smith of Jerseyville, Katie (Chris) Sievers of Jerseyville and Kristy Motley and her companion, Sean Donohue, of Troy, Illinois; six grandchildren, Brittany Schulte, Tyler (Becky) Sievers, Jordan Sievers, Brooke Sievers, Meghan Motley and Tanner Motley; two sisters and brothers in-law, Sandy and Gale Tiller of Alton and Denise and Ron Floyd of Elsah; a brother and sister in-law, Joseph and Amy Smith of Godfrey; his mother in-law, Helen Meuth of Jerseyville; brothers in-law and sisters in-law, Robert Meuth and his fiancé, Tami Turner of Columbia, Missouri, Joseph Meuth and his companion, Donna Rice, of Kane, Thomas and Terri Meuth of Carrollton, William and Claudia Meuth of Jerseyville, Steven and Jane Meuth of Johnston City, and Susan and Max Dixon of Jerseyville; along with numerous nieces, nephews and a host of dear friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Deborah Berry; his father in-law, Cletus Meuth; as well as two nephews, Terry Tiller and Eric Dixon.
Visitation will be held from 4 to 7 p.m., Thursday, June 29, 2023 at Crawford Funeral Home in Jerseyville.
Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10 a.m., Friday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church in Jerseyville, with Father Hyland Smith officiating.
Burial will follow at St. Francis Cemetery in Jerseyville, with Tri-County Honor Guard conducting full military honors.
In lieu of flowers or plants, memorials may be given to Tri-County Honor Guard or to Fischer House St. Louis.
