Michael J.P. Hanahan, 38, of Godfrey, IL passed away Thursday October 12, 2023 after a lengthy illness. He spent his last days surrounded by family and friends.
He was born August 12, 1985, the son of Joseph P & Mary Popielewski Hanahan of Alton, IL.
Mike was a graduate of Marquette Catholic High school and SIUE school of Business and spent the bulk of his working life in business field.
He loved his family and friends, the outdoors, fishing, and working on his mini farm and his 1860 home. He had many varied interests, ranging from installing solar power to organic gardening to making hot sauce, and was always ready to learn a new skill. He had a zest for life and was always willing to lend a helping hand, and ready to share laughs and a good time. “Big Mike” as he was known to his friends was a big guy with an equally big heart.
He is survived by his parents, his sister Dr Sara (Scott Yanta) Hanahan and nephew JP. Many aunts, uncles and cousins. He was proceeded in death by his paternal grandparents, Ray and Maxine Hanahan and his maternal grandparents, Dr Henry and Martha Popielewski.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 19, 2023 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm at Gent Funeral Home in Alton. A mass of Christian burial will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, October 20, 2023 at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. Father Leland Thorpe, OMV will officiate.
