Mel L. Rust age 91, passed away at 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at the Meridian Village Care Center in Glen Carbon, Il.
He was born December 23, 1919 in Dorchester, IL to the late Fred and Bertha (Grady) Rust.
Mel served his country in the U.S. Army during WWII in Africa and Italy. He was employed for over 28 years at the Shell Oil Company in Wood River as a supervisor, before his retirement.
Mel was faithful to a life of care-giving with his family and friends. In addition he loved his golf and the Cincinnati Reds. He was a hard worker all his life with an independent spirit that never gave up. He had a knack for making others happy by his fun-loving nature. He will be missed but remembered fondly by his family and friends.
He married Lillie Mae Roloff on June 28, 1941 at St. Patrick’s Church in Alton. She preceded him in death on September 6, 2007.
He is survived by a daughter; Brenda and her husband Jeff Miller of Alton, two grandchildren; Sarah Mullins and Corey and his wife Katie Miller; and many dear nieces and nephews.
Mel was preceded in death by his parents, wife, and three brothers; Herman Rust, Robert Rust, and Vernon Rust.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm, Monday, April 25, 2011 at Faith Fellowship Church at 4719 Seminary Rd in Alton. Funeral services will follow at 7 pm, with Dr. Daymond Talkington officiating.
Graveside services at 10 am, Tuesday April 26, 2011 at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Godfrey, with full military honors by the Alton VFW Post 1308 Ritual Team.
