Maxine Burke

Maxine Burke, age 94 of Greenville, passed away at 8:07 a.m. Monday, August 26, 2024, at Hickory Estates Memory Care in Greenville.

Mary Maxine Byxbe, the daughter of Frederick Benjamin Byxbe and Mary Etta Davis Byxbe was born on December 3, 1929, in Greenville. Maxine grew up in Greenville and attended the Greenville Public Schools and graduated from Greenville High School with the class of 1947. Maxine went on to Greenville College and SIU-E later.

Maxine and James W. Burke were united in marriage on November 25, 1949, at the Greenville First Christian Church and enjoyed over 47 years together before his death on November 8, 1997. Maxine and James were long time members of the Greenville First Christian Church. Maxine played the organ and piano at the church for many years. She also played for countless funerals over the past 40 plus years.  Maxine also played at the Greenville First United Methodist Church and most recently enjoyed playing for her friends at the Glenwood. They were also long time member of the Greenville Country Club and Maxine loved playing bridge and was a member of the bridge club.

Maxine and James were the parents of three sons, Terrence K. Burke of Greenville who survives and special friend Sharon Akers, Patrick S. Burke and Timothy M. Burke who both preceded Maxine in death. Loving grandmother to Dan Forsberg and wife Tammy, Brittany Burke and Jack Burke. Great-grandmother of 5; Daniel, Joshua, Ashley, and twins and great-great-grandmother of Avery and Dillon Forsberg.

She was the last of her generation, preceded in death by her parents and siblings: Earl, Eugene, Lloyd, Robert and Melvin.

Funeral services will be held 12p.m. noon Saturday, September 14, 2024, at the Greenville First Christian Church. Interment will follow in Mt. Auburn Cemetery. Visitation will be at the church from 10 a.m. until service time Saturday. Memorials are to the church or Bond County Hospice. Donnell–Wiegand Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
