Mavis (Johnson) Taylor passed away at 7:08 a.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2011 at Blu Fountain Manor.  She was born December 23, 1920, in Kimberly, Alabama the daughter of the late Forest and Mary (Crane) Johnson.  On June 7, 1942, in Valier, IL she married Howard “Todd” Taylor and he preceded her in death on February 12, 1997.  They owned and operated Taylor Cleaners for ten years in Carterville while Todd was also a part-time pastor throughout Southern Illinois.  After selling their successful business and surrendering to full-time ministry, they eventually moved to Alton in 1957 when Todd accepted a call to be the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church.  While in Alton she worked for the Alton school district, but spent the majority of her time faithfully supporting her husband’s ministry at Calvary and Alton First Southern Baptist Church for over 35 years until his retirement in 1993.  Mavis’ life was personified and guided by what Jesus called the two greatest commandments, which are to love God with all your heart, soul and mind, and to love others as yourself.  No one loved their family more than Mavis.  She is survived by her son Stephen Taylor; a daughter, Nancy Meggos and her husband, Harry; four grandchildren, Lori Merkel and her husband Stephen, Staci Hayes and her husband Brian, Nick Meggos and his wife Jody, and Todd Meggos and his wife Jennifer; and eight great-grandchildren; Bailey and Jordan Merkel, Hudson and Holden Hayes, Harrison and Nikolas Meggos, and Madeline and Olivia Meggos.  Besides her husband, parents and siblings she was preceded in death by her daughter-in-law, Kathie Taylor.  Visitation will be Sunday, August 21, 2011 from 4:00-8:00 p.m. at Gent Funeral Home in Alton.  Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2011 at Calvary Baptist Church with Reverend Andre’ Dobson to officiate.  Burial will be at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.  Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.  Additional information and online guest book may be found at
