Mary S. Turner, 89, passed away at 9:05 am Thursday, August 11, 2011 at home with her family at her side while under the care of Hospice of Southern Illinois.
She was born on January 22, 1922 in Tamms, IL, the daughter of Frances and Bertha (Vanzant) Pettit.
She married J.C. Turner in 1940. He preceded her in death on May 7, 1988.
Mary was a homemaker most of her life. She was a member of the Cottage Hills VFW Women’s Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, traveling and shopping and most of all she loved spending time with her family and friends.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Richard Sturgill of Worden; her grandchildren, Michael Turner of Moro, Kenneth Turner of Collinsville and Cherise Sowell of Granite City; five great grandchildren, Jacob Bland, Brianna Hoffman, JayCee Turner, Janelle Turner and Joseph Turner; a half brother and his wife, Frances Ray and Dee Dee Pettit of Southern IL and several nieces, nephews, cousins and good friends.
In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a son, James C. Turner and a grandson, James C. Turner and two sisters, Lucille Matthews and Frances Sissom
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 pm Monday, August 15, 2011 at Elias, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home in Bethalto where funeral services will be held at 11 am Tuesday, August 16, 2011.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be made to the American Veterans Association or the Cottage Hills VFW Women’s Auxiliary.
