Mary Ellen (Hillig) Hazelwood, 74, died at 12:23 p.m., Friday, August 2, 2024 at SSM Saint Louis University Hospital.
She was born on April 21, 1950 in Alton, Illinois and was the daughter of the late Francis and Dorothy (Hunter) Hillig.
Mary married the love of her life, William L. Hazelwood Jr. on July 25, 1980 at the First Baptist Church in Jerseyville, and together they shared have shared in 44 years of marriage.
Mary centered her life around her family. She was a loving wife, devoted mother and proud and noting grandmother and great grandmother. Throughout her children’s lives, she was a constant and steady source of strength and unwavering love and support. As they began families of their own, she wore the title of “Nene” and “Granny” with immense pride and enjoyed spoiling her grandchildren and great grandchildren s often as she could.
She was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan, a lover of John Wayne and western films and for many years spent a great deal of time cross-stitching, until her eyesight no longer allowed.
Mary never met a stranger and enjoyed taking car rides and keeping up with the happenings of the neighborhood, walking around Walmart to socialize and most especially enjoyed her time with “the girls” at 16 West Quick Shop in Jerseyville.
She will be fondly remembered by all who loved and knew her for her warm and welcoming smile, her kind nature and her loving heart.
Surviving are her husband, Bill Hazelwood of Jerseyville; four children, William Hillig and his companion, Stephanie Harless, of Cuba, Missouri, John Hillig and his wife, Melissa, of Kampsville, William L. “Bill” Hazelwood III and his wife, Amy, of Kane and Angie Hazelwood and her companion, Jon Wock, of Jerseyville; fifteen grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; a brother, Charles Hillig of Pennsylvania; a sister, Lois Meredith of Jerseyville; two sisters in-law, Betty Hillig of Murrayville and Janice Whitehead of Alton.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister in-law, Robert and Oleta Hillig and Tommy Hillig; as well as two brothers in-law, J.R. Meredith and Jerry Whitehead.
Per her wishes, no public services will be held.
Memorials may be given to the family, in care of Crawford Funeral Home, who has been entrusted with arrangements.
