Mary Esther Chiado, 90, passed away at 5:30 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2011 at her home. Born Sept. 1, 1920 in Wasson, Ill., she was a daughter of John and Mary Franz. She married Joseph P. Chiado Feb. 1, 1942 in St. Charles, Mo. He survives. A secretary for the U.S. Department of Defense, she retired in 1981 after 30 years. Esther was an avid bowler, golfer and bridge player, and she was a charter member of the Wood River Eagles.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Donna and Nelson Gregory of Bethalto; grandchildren, Jim and his wife Shelly Gregory and Donna Lamble; great grandchildren, Tari Blocker, Brook Gregory and Kyle and Erin Lamble; a niece and her husband, Barbara and J.W. Pulliam of Galatia, Ill. and a great nephew Alan and Angie Pulliam and their children.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Alonda Abney and Carmela Brondon; and two brothers, Elmer and Johnny Franz.
Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Thursday, March 17 at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, with a prayer service at 4 p.m.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, March 18 at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Bethalto by Father Thomas Liebler.
Burial will follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens in Bethalto.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.
